Abstract: While theoretical frameworks of food system governance simplify complex food system phenomena, they may ignore other occurrences outside their framework boundaries, and the practical considerations informing actual governance initiatives. This article discusses governance frameworks such as alternative food networks, bioregions and foodsheds, rural-urban linkages, short food supply chains, and city-region food systems; and draws insights from real-life governance initiatives to demonstrate the practical considerations that inform such initiatives. It concludes that a) localized grievances inform governance responses, b) globalization and localization need not be delinked, and c) while alternative voices are valuable, markets are important for food systems sustainability.
