Abstract
Carbon dioxide removal has been described both as a mitigation necessity and as a risk to mitigation ambition or sustainability in the academic literature. This Comment examines the assumptions underlying carbon dioxide removal narratives and investigates whether they are reconcilable to inform the focus of research and policy.
