 Abstract: The rapid rise of alternative proteins is often framed as a necessary response to the environmental and ethical challenges of conventional livestock systems. Yet as these technologies scale, there is growing concern that, if poorly governed, they could reproduce many of the environmental and social shortcomings associated with industrial agriculture, from the concentration of corporate control to increasing energy demands and the further disconnection of food systems from ecosystems. In this Voices, we ask: how can the alternative protein transition be shaped to avoid repeating the mistakes of industrial agriculture?
